Preformed Pond Liner
If you're looking
for the fastest way possible to get your pond up and running,
inside or out, the best solution (speed-wise anyway) is a
preformed pond liner.
Most pet stores
and home and garden suppliers carry them, and there are usually
several sizes, shapes and designs to choose from.
The first
consideration should be the location of the pond. Will it be
outside? If so, do you live in an area that experiences
freezes? And on the flip side, if you live in an area that gets
very warm weather, or the pond will be in the sun, you'll need
to choose something as deep as possible, and to place the pond
at the very least partially underground, or build sides up
around it. This will help to insulate the pond from both very
cold and very warm weather. If you plan to have some sort of
fountain or filter, remember that you'll need access to power.
There are some new products on the market that are solar
powered, to this could be an option. You may also be able to
build your own solar power source. Visit EZ Wind and
Solar Energy to find out how.
If you're
planning on having some plants in the pond, preformed pond
liners that have built in shelves make it easy to keep plants
of different heights. But remember that any sort of shallow
access may invite unwanted visitors to make a buffet of your
pond fish.
Depending on the
type of fish or other pond life you'd like to keep, you many
not need add ional filtration or an air pump. I've personally
kept goldfish, mosquito fish and guppy's in a preformed pond
with just some anacharis, water lettuce, and or hyacinth. The
plants act as a natural filter system and the water stays super
clear. As long as the pond is not overstocked, this has always
worked out just fine for me.
Preformed ponds
are an easy, inexpensive and versitile way of bringing the
beauty of a garden fish pond into your world.
